Crews Battle Fire on S.R. 292
10/16/2008
Station 140 along with mutual aid companies responded to S.R. 292 for a reported structure fire. During the response, Engine 140
gained a visual of the location and confirmed the working fire. Crews from the 140 Engine made an aggressive attack to try and contain
the main body of fire. Chief Story would assume command of the incident.
The building consisted of several additions and a metal roof, which hampered the firefighter's efforts. While it took a few hours and
much work, the fire was declared under control with no injuries reported. The 140 members would clear the scene around 5:30am.
Chief 140 would like to thank all the mutual aid companies for their assistance.

***Community Supports Injured Member ***
The recent spaghetti dinner held at the firehouse in support of Terry Plata, who was injured during a Lenten fundraising event, took in
more than $4000. The turn out for the event was bigger than planned, with some being turned away. Both the department and family are
most grateful for the outpouring of support.

A successful night at Lenten meals turned into a tragic event. While cleaning up after a successful night of lenten meals at the fire station, a member was cleaning around the deep fryers when for some reason the fryers slid forward and upset, dumping 4 vats of hot oil on her. Crews assisted her immediately and provided care. A helicopter was called for but was unable to fly due to weather. The firefighter has burns over 30% of her body and is being transferred to the Lehigh Valley Burn Unit. Updates will follow when they become available. Please keep your thoughts and prayers with the family and the firefighters at Northmoreland.
2008 Fund Drive Underway
The 2008 Fund Drive is underway, with past years only brining in 49 to 52 percent participation, we are hoping for a record breaking
year. With the arrival of the casino's which resulted in the drop of bingo players, we are hoping for a banner year. Our members
are doing alternative fund raising to make up forthe bingo shortage, and any little bit helps.
And as a reminder, all donations are tax deductible!
Lenten Meals
Lenten Meals every Friday night during Lent, take outs available. Call the station for orders at 570-333-4911 between 4:30 and 7:00 pm.

The Wyoming County fairgrounds will have a new building this year due to an Eagle Scout project by one of our Junior firefighters. Members from 140 along with the local Boy Scout troop erect a semi enclosed pavilion to be used by the Northmoreland Volunteers for thier famous Bingo stand. Numerous contributions allowed this project to be completely funded by donations through the scout project costing the firefighters nothing but a little sweat. The finishing touches will be completed in time for this years fair near Labor Day weekend. A special thanks go out to all who helped make this happen.
Dept Receives Rescue Training

Northmoreland Fire Fighters take one of the first steps to becoming DOHVRT (Department of Health Vehicle Rescue Technician Certified).
Representatives from Genesis Rescue tools gave a 4 hour class on working with the tools that were recently purchased. During the next
few months the new rescue will be placed in service, tools mounted and training completed. Over 20 Northmoreland Firefighters
attended the class even after a grueling day of brush fires in extreme heat and humidity. |
Helping Chief Peters

Northmoreland Twp. Vol. Fire Co. does mutual aid to other departments on a daily basis, however every once in a while we must assist
other departments, sometimes even out of state. Recently, Fire Chief Joe Peters of the Stonewall Jackson VFD in Virginia, suffered
a personal loss. Chief Peters was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer in his lower leg. Unfortunately Joe recently had to have his leg
amputated due to the cancer growing deep in his leg. Joe is undergoing fittings for a prosthetic leg. To help defray costs of the
prostetic leg (which will be over $110,000.00), The Northmoreland Volunteers made a donation as well as the memorial contribution from
the Ruth Smith Family and a coin jar that was set up at the Centermoreland Store were added to the amount to help defray the costs.
This sizable donation will only be a small part of the total recovery bills Joe has yet to overcome, we are proud to help out one of
our own and wish him the best.
Joe was raised in the fire service, his father Guy, was the Assistant Chief for years in Northmoreland and is a Life Member. Marge,
Joe's Mother is still active also, holding the very busy treasurers position.
Over the Memorial Day weekend Joe and his family met with Fire Chief Chuck Story and Safety Officer Bob Smith and Mary Anne Warner
(son and daughter of Ruth Smith). After a tour of the station and some catching up from days past, we presented him and his family
with a check to assist him in his recovery.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Peters family and our extended family at the Stonewall Jackson VFD.
You can track Joe's progress at Care Pages. Use "JoePetersupdates" for the login.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe's family.
